Stop Thinking. Stop Pondering. Stop Strategizing. Stop Debating. Start Doing.

Quilt Qualities

The panel base is mostly a pure, bloody, vibrant red color. This is also in the material of somewhat a shiny, soft, velvet material that vividly gives the panel some extravagant flare.

The quilt panel that is being portrayed is pinpointed on the block number 792 in which is aligned along the borders of other characterized panels. Along with this very block, there are over 5000 blocks that are shared within the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Nevertheless, this specific panel is in the memory of Jimmy Popejoy.

There are no borders along the tight edges of the panel surprisingly, nevertheless this blends in well along with the other individual panels displayed on the block. These different, Individualized panels were included onto the block beautifully incorporating many similar art styles such as the rainbows, the arms filled with cotton, the shiny material used etcetera. In Jimmy’s panel, a large energetic rainbow sprouts from the corner of the panel, being lightly sprinkled with musical notes.

Things within the panel that I took notice of immediately was the dog that was held by the shiny arm. This dog obviously may have some sort of very important significance, considering that this image is shown somewhat in the center of the panel, however it isn’t described why the dog is there. Additionally, along with the dog, the rainbow in the body of the image is shown vibrantly in the majority of the picture which by its colorful characteristics, brings light and joy to the image.

There is no factual evidence of why the rainbow is placed there but by using symbolism, the rainbow could either represent joy and happiness or that the individual(Jimmy Popejoy) was an activist of the LGBT Pride community.

Another important visual element that I detected within this image was the blue bracelet circling the shiny arm holding the dog. This may bring clearer observation to the clues of what the dog represents, obviously the dog was owned by either Jimmy or a loved one, nevertheless, it is understandable that the blue bracelet is jewelry owned by again either Jimmy or loved one.

It is essential that many of the viewers of this panel recognized the musical notes that are scattered across the rainbow. This gives the rainbow an ever greater meaning, maybe Jimmy had an aspiration for music and pursued a career in one, or possibly just has a respect for the fine musical arts.

The Colors of Popejoy

There are no extreme forms of writing or text appearing on the panel. The only words on the panel are portrayed as the person’s name ” Jimmy Popejoy” and the time of the subject’s lifespan.

Jimmy Popejoy passed away when he was 32 years old.

These words appear to be crafted onto the panel along with some stitching. This crafting ability also includes the image of a rainbow, an arm and a dog along with some musical notes.

Generally, the panel seems to portray mostly dark colors aside from the rainbow which include red, brown, blue and the text being in black. The dark text is what appears to be made of a thin, soft cotton fabric which gives the ‘raised’ look on the font of the words.

The rainbow has 4 different colors that are each start from a small starting point, slowly spreading mid-way to about 2 inches in thickness then eventually lead all the way to the right end of the panel.

While the colors of the rainbow vary in many, there is depicted to only be purple, green, yellow, and orange. Another noticeable factor is that while there are many dark colors on this panel, it also appears that majority of the colors on this panel are warm.

Also inclusive, the borders of the panel are of the clear shade of white, appearing to be about 1 & 1/2 inches thick. Along these borders, there are bronze loops that are set inside the border from the bottom left corner of the panel to the middle and another one all the way at the end on the right corner.

A Helping Hand

Another important visual element that I detected within this image was the blue bracelet circling the shiny arm holding the dog. This may bring clearer observation to the clues of what the dog represents, obviously the dog was owned by either Jimmy or a loved one, nevertheless, it is understandable that the blue bracelet is jewelry owned by again either Jimmy or loved one.

An arm has been stitched onto the bottom right corner of the quilt. The stitched arm is shown to have a shiny and soft fabric that is encasing what feels to be cotton.

It is essential that many of the viewers of this panel recognized the musical notes that are scattered across the rainbow. This gives the rainbow an ever greater meaning, maybe Jimmy had an aspiration for music and pursued a career in one, or possibly just has a respect for the fine musical arts.

Around the wrist of this arm is a blue bracelet that is made out of tiny, reflective decorative material that is also stitched. This is displayed to be the jewelry of the person wearing it, the symbolism of the bracelet remains to be unknown with current sources, however, it is blatantly obvious that it is someone that meant well to Popejoy.

The dog that is wrapped around the two fingers of the shiny hand is of another familiar, soft cloth material that is also stitched to the panel. The dog is of a very dark brown color and is placed right under the rainbow along with the musical notes.
